Description
Co-exclusivity DESTIN DE PIERRE – MERCURE LIMOUSIN
This chateau, as mysterious as it is majestic, is nestled in the heart of the former province of Lower Limousin, at the crossroads of the current A20 (Paris-Toulouse) and A89 (Bordeaux-Lyon) motorways. In the 10th century, the first lords of the place erected a wooden defence tower. It was replaced in the 13th century by the present round stone tower to which a fortified dwelling was attached. Not much remains of this main building, which has been rebuilt many times over the centuries. A rich and eventful history:
Were the masters of the place among those who followed Godefroy de Bouillon on the first crusade? We don’t know… but the brother of one of them went on the crusade with the Viscount of Comborn.
From the 13th century, they became vassals of the Viscount of Turenne.
Having become Protestant, the seigniory would have to contend with the religious wars of the 16th century and taken over by the Catholics after fierce battles. In 1730, the barony was sold to Jean Baptiste Mérigonde, contractor of the fortifications of King Louis XV in Perpignan. He had the main part of the main building rebuilt. In 1790, the revolutionaries plundered and set fire to the castle. Only the defence tower resisted. In 1792, thanks to the use of public force, it escaped demolition by a group of “enraged” and undoubtedly malicious individuals. Important works will be undertaken during the 19th century. It was at this time that the underground, which had become too dangerous, was walled up.
Then it was sold in 1956 to an engineer who had fallen “in love” with the château and who undertook enormous work to give it greater comfort, including a wall in the large living room that was entirely glazed! (The glass was imported from the United States). The current owners have also carried out major embellishment and upgrading work (electrical, among other things).
They have also restored the 3.4 acres wooded park, adorned with century-old trees, to make this historic site a haven of peace.
