Description
Magnificent medieval château with 15 main rooms, at least 600 m2 of living space over 4 stories, built on the edge of a deep, cool valley, a natural defence in these undulating surroundings, on a promontory close to Agen. It impresses with its superimposed terraces and corbelled watchtowers. It was a villa at the end of the 13th century, meaning a rural holding protected by a small fortress. Over time, the site became a veritable Castelnau, a fort surrounded by a village. The original castle was shaped like a right-angled triangle, with cantilevered watchtowers topping the east and west corners. A square tower was added to the north corner in the 14th century, armed with an army of cross-shaped loopholes. It was then extended and remodelled in the late 15th or early 16th century. In the 17th century, it was enlarged again on the north side and took on its current appearance: construction of a courtyard wing with mullioned windows and double transoms (Henri III / Louis XIII period), construction of the outbuildings, construction of two semi-circular portals adorned with columns, giving access to the courtyard. In 1790, the castle was saved by the villagers. In 1963, it was bought by a chief architect of historic monuments, who restored it from top to bottom according to the rules of art and history. It was listed (1964) and then classified (1988) as a partial Historic Monument. To the west, just a stone’s throw from the château is the chapel, which has also been lovingly restored. Formerly the village church, it has a flat apse and four bays with cross vaults. The coat of arms of the Beauville family, owners of the Château from the 13th to 16th centuries, is engraved on one of the escutcheons inside the chapel. The château, caretaker’s cottage and outbuildings (former stables) are arranged around an enclosed courtyard. Outside the courtyard are the chapel of Saint Pierre, the woodshed and the dovecote. The entire property spans 3ha 64a 23ca.
